Skiing in Armenia may be limited to two resorts but it is superb which is not surprising because Armenia was once home to the legendary Mt. Ararat (now in Turkey). High mountains are abound in Armenia. The highest is Mt. Aragats (13,435 ft/4,095 m). No point in the country is lower than 1,280 ft/390 m.

Two main ski areas in Armenia are Tsakhadzor/Teghenis and Jermuk. Tsakhadzor is a resort town located 50 km outside of the capital Yerevan at the slopes of Mt. Teghenis.

This growing ski resort is equipped with modern amenities and all new infrastructure. The peak of Mt. Teghenis (9,248 ft/2,819 m) offers majectic views of distant Mt. Ararat. Cold climate, dry snow and inexpensive lodging provide for a unique experience and great value for skiers and snowboarders.

The newest Armenian ski resort is Jermuk which is located 170 km SE from Yerevan.  Jermuk features world class cross country trails that have been used exclusively by the Russian cross country national team, but will be open to public 2008/2009 season.

The third mountain resort Mymekh located near Vanadzor in Northern Armenia has been out of operation for years but it may be back to service soon.

Although there is no organized skiing and snowboarding in Albania the country has magnificent mountains to lure a real ski adventurer. The lack of western style ski resorts does not stop powder hounds from getting their fix on the unspoiled slopes of the Europe’s most secluded nation.

Until recently Albania has been the Europe’s most isolated country. Prior to the government changes in the 1990s Albania has had very little in the way of any infrastructure, let alone ski resorts.

For this very fact the Albanian mountains may be one of the few remaining places in Europe where a passionate skier or a snowboarder can take a sleigh ride to a mountain village and visit with the local folks who are eager to host skiers and mountaineers.  Backcountry skiers who don’t mind hiking up the hill early in the morning get rewarded with magnificent views and untouched nature.

Several mountain ranges cross the country. The Dinaric Alps (2693m) that stretch through most of the Balkans offer spectacular mountain vistas along the borders with Montenegro and Serbia in the north.

The Korabi mountain chain along the border with the FYR of Macedonia peaks at 2751 meters.
