Denmark may be one of the last countries to think of when it comes to skiing and snowboarding but there is a bit of skiing even in this flat, snow deprived European country.

The highest elevation in Denmark is 170.86 m (560.56 ft), hardly enough for serious sledding. Danish skiers and snowboarders who have no patience to travel to nearby Sweden for a taste of real mountains can ride the man made synthetic ski hill in Silkeborg or the only indoors ski slope in Denmark in Rødovre.

Croatia may have very few alpine ski resorts but the country has produced several FIS World Cup medalists and Olympians in the recent years. Brother and sister Ivica and Janica Kostelic have turned the spotlight on this small country nested between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea.

The most popular ski resort Sljeme (3,389 ft/1,033 m) is located just north of the capital Zagreb. It is the only FIS World Cup host mountain near a major metropolitan area. Sljeme is accessible by a twenty minute gondola ride and bus service.

Two smaller ski areas in Crotatia are Bjelolasica and Platak.

DECEMBER - APRIL

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a south European nation situated on the Balkan Peninsula. The central part of the country features the dramatic Dinaric Alps which provide for excellent off-piste skiing and snowboarding. The capital city is a short one-hour flight south of Vienna, Austria.

Hiking and mountaineering clubs in Bosnia and Herzegovina started appearing in the 1920s. Popular to this day, these clubs are credited with organizing the first ski trips and lessons.

The first Bosnian ski resorts with permanent chair lifts opened their slopes to the public in the 1950s. A major investment in winter sports facilities took place in the early 1980s. Sarajevo the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1984. The facilities built for the games include one speed skating rink and two ice skating arenas, a bobsled course, two ski jumps and a cross country track at Mt. Igman. Two existing ski resorts at Mt. Jahorina and Mt. Bjelasnica went through major improvements prior to the games.

While the tradition of skiing in Bosnia and Herzegovina goes far back there are fewer than five permanent ski resorts in the country today. Most of the chair lifts, grooming and hospitality facilities are outdated by western standards. With spectacular nature, challenging slopes and dry, low-moisture snow Bosnia and Herzegovina is an excellent destination for a low-frills expert skier and snowboarder who is willing to sacrifice some personal comfort for a challenging and safe adventure.
